Australian quilt and doona sizes in cm: Single 140 x 210, King Single 165 x 210, Double 180 x 210, Queen 210 x 210, King 240 x 210 and Super King 270 x 235. Quilt, doona and duvet are three names for the same product, so the chart below applies whichever word you use. These are the standard dimensions across the Tontine quilt range.

How to choose the right quilt size

Start with your mattress size, then decide how much overhang you want. A quilt that matches the bed size gives roughly 20 to 30 cm of drop on each side: a queen quilt (210 cm wide) on a queen mattress (153 cm wide) leaves about 28 cm each side, while a double quilt (180 cm) on a double mattress (138 cm) leaves about 21 cm. Length is 210 cm for every size except super king (235 cm), which is enough to cover the foot of a standard 188 to 203 cm mattress with the quilt pulled up to the pillows.

Three situations call for sizing up. Couples sharing a double bed often prefer a queen quilt so neither person loses the covers overnight. Deep pillow-top mattresses, or a mattress with a mattress topper on it, use up overhang, so a king quilt on a queen bed keeps the drop you expect. And if you like the quilt to reach the floor on a low bed frame, go one size up. Sizing down is rarely a good idea: a quilt narrower than the mattress will pull off the edges as you move.

Quilt, doona or duvet: are the sizes different?

No. Doona is the Australian word (originally a Tontine trademark), quilt is the general term used in Australian stores, and duvet is the British and European term. All three describe the same filled bed cover and use the same Australian size chart above. Take care with imported comforters sized for US beds: US queen and king dimensions differ from Australian sizes, so always check the measurement in centimetres rather than the label.

Matching quilt covers, warmth and weight
