How flat sheets are sized

A flat sheet adds roughly 40 to 50 cm on each side of the mattress width and enough length to fold over the top of the quilt and tuck under the foot. That is why a queen flat sheet (255 cm wide) is more than 100 cm wider than a queen mattress (153 cm). If your mattress is unusually deep, or you like a generous tuck, buying the flat sheet one size up is a common choice; the sheet simply tucks further under. The fitted sheet, by contrast, must match the mattress size exactly.
